More Brits 'shop online with smartphones'

01/02/2012

There has been an increase in the number of people who use smartphones to shop online, it has been suggested.

Growing numbers of Brits could be using their smartphone to shop for goods online while on the go.

This is according to commerce sales leader for IBM Europe David Hoggs, who explained this was a major trend indicated in research conducted by his organisation.

It revealed there was a 5.4 per cent increase in internet shopping throughout December 2011, with millions of people said to be doing this instead of hitting the high street.

Mr Hoggs claimed individuals are not just using their mobile devices to browse and compare prices, but are also completing the actual transaction from the handset.

"That went up to representing over ten per cent of e-commerce sales this year, which is a huge growth in just one year," the expert commented, specifying this equated to a 300 per cent annual growth.

He attributed this to the increasing presence of Android smartphones and Apple iPhones, arguing people are becoming more confident when using them.
