Weak Wi-Fi Signal? Grab a Baking Tray!

Tomorrow marks the start of our energy focus month, and we’ve got some great content and polls for you to get involved with (with the recent price hikes I’m expecting some strong opinions!). Today, however, I thought I would share with you all a great little story that I spotted with an ingenious piece of advice.

Peter Cochrane, former Chief Technology Officer at BT, was on a boat in the Norfolk Broads but was unable to get online. With only one bar on both his 2.5G and Wi-Fi he came up with a novel solution to boost his signal. A quick trip to the galley and some kitchen experimentation had Peter discovering that he was able to boost his signal with a humble baking tray.

Writing on his blog, Cochrane said “(I) now have three bars of Wi-Fi and 2.5G by way of the unlikely combination of a baking tray and some judicious positioning. No matter how well prepared you are, there are times when you don’t quite have to hand all the technology you really need. All the other options would have been far more expensive and far less convenient.”

What an elegant solution! Not sure I’ll be carrying round a spare baking tray with me when I’m out of the office just yet, but I’ll definitely be logging Peter’s solution in the memory bank! What lengths have you gone to get online? Tell us your stories on Twitter and Facebook.

One Response to Weak Wi-Fi Signal? Grab a Baking Tray!

  1. As a sailor I often struggle to get a wifi signal and had vowed that for this season I would buy onbe of those aerials but hey I might just have to give the baking tin a try first!
